The Bar Association is delighted to invite you to attend the inaugural Sybil Morrison Lecture, which will be delivered in the Bar Association Common Room** at 5.15pm on 4 March 2019** by Claire Palmer and chaired by the Hon Justice M Beazley QC AC.
Claire is the inaugural recipient of the Katrina Dawson Award, which aims to encourage young women to practise at the Bar. Claire was called to the Bar in 2017 and is a barrister on Sixth Floor Selborne Wentworth Chambers.
The inaugural Sybil Morrison lecture will highlight the life of Sybil Morrison, the first woman to practise at the NSW Bar. Morrison was admitted in 1924, six years after the enactment of the Women’s Legal Status Act 1918 (NSW). That Act provided that a person shall not ‘by reason of sex’ be prevented from being admitted to practice as a barrister or solicitor. The seminar will also situate Morrison’s career and the passage of the Women’s Legal Status Act against a series of international and national developments that promoted women lawyers at the beginning of the 20th century and will consider how each woman who is a ‘first’, and each woman thereafter, makes it easier for the next. The Sybil Morrison Lecture is an initiative of the New South Wales Bar Association’s Diversity & Equality Committee.
