Important Updates on the Laws of Modern Slavery
With the recent passing of the Modern Slavery Amendment (Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner) Bill 2023 (Cth), establishing an independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner to lead the fight against modern slavery, this CPD will provide barristers with an update on the laws of modern slavery including an overview of the two statutory reviews of Australia’s modern slavery legislation and an overview of the international legal developments of modern slavery including the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
The CPD will also provide a practical analysis of human rights due diligence in the area of business and human rights with guest speakers, Professor Justine Nolan, Director of the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW, the New South Wales Anti-slavery Commissioner Dr James Cockayne and Wayne Jordash KC of Doughty Street Chambers, London. This CPD has been organised by the Human Rights Committee and will be chaired by Madeleine Bridgett.
