Investigating and prosecuting international crimes

The Human Rights Committee invites you to join us for a CPD on the investigation and prosecution of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. This CPD will provide an on-the-ground, practical perspective on the inner workings of international criminal courts, and the realities and challenges for practitioners working within them.

Our three speakers will share their extensive experience investigating and prosecuting international crimes:

·         Her Honour Judge Baly of the NSW District Court, who will chair the panel, formerly served as a Prosecutor in the Bosnian State Court in Sarajevo, the Special Court for Sierra Leone and the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

·         Brendan Rook worked as a war crimes investigator for the International Criminal Court, investigating international crimes committed in Uganda, Darfur, Myanmar, Libya, the Central African Republic and Kenya. He was a member of a team that investigated who betrayed Anne Frank, and also worked for the Office of the Special Investigator looking at alleged breaches of the laws of war by members of the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan.

·          Lyma Nguyen, barrister, worked for over a decade as Civil Party Counsel at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, representing victims of the Khmer Rouge Regime. She is List Counsel at the International Criminal Court, and is a current member of the Legal Advisory Committee of the International Criminal Court Bar Association.

This panel will be of interest to all, but is a must-watch for any barrister who wants to develop a practice in international criminal and human rights law.
