Local Court criminal practice: Tips from the Bench
Thursday 7 July 2022
The New Barristers Committee are pleased to present a CPD seminar on Local Court criminal practice on Thursday 7 July. The session is the second instalment of a three-part series on Local Court practice. Our speakers include Magistrate James Gibson, Magistrate Peter Thompson and Magistrate Joy Boulos. The following topics will be discussed with a view to providing the junior Bar with invaluable insights from the Bench:
- Defended hearings
- Pitching the sentence
- Seeking a non-conviction
- General tips for keeping the bench happy
- Do’s and don’ts on PCA pleas (particularly in more serious examples e.g., second and third offences, high range, proper application of the guideline judgment)
- Bail applications in the Local Court
- Use of authorities and written submissions
Barristers over seven years are most welcome to attend.
Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance. Questions can be submitted at the time of registration or via email to cpd@nswbar.asn.au.
