The last appeal from the High Court of Australia

The Privy Council allowed an appeal, brought by special leave, from the judgement of the High Court in Port Jackson Stevedoring Pty Ltd v Salmond & Spraggon (Australia) Pty Ltd (1978) 139 CLR 231. In the result the judgement of the sole dissenting justice of the High Court (Barwick CJ) was upheld. Counsel for the appellant were Mr A.M Gleeson QC who led Mr B.W. Rayment (then of junior counsel). The Privy Council decision (reported at (1980) 144 CLR 300) is still good law in Australia and in the United Kingdom.
