Artificial intelligence (AI), already impacting our lives in many hidden ways, continues to have a significant effect upon all aspects of legal practice, creating new legal issues in areas such as negligence, criminal and civil liability, ownership, health law, shareholder disputes, insurance and privacy. Driverless cars, biased algorithms and data, facial recognition software and carebots are just the beginning.

Have you ever performed an internet search only to then have what you searched for show up in your Facebook feed? Significant privacy challenges arise as more and more of our sensitive personal data is being collected without us knowing or consenting. This data is input into highly-advanced AI algorithms which create behavioural profiles for us that are used to manipulate our spending and other habits.

What are the privacy challenges for AI? What is personal information and when and how can it be used? How can data breaches be prevented? What legal and ethical challenges do they bring?

The NSW Bar’s Innovation & Technology Committee is delighted to present this CPD on privacy, data and surveillance, which is part of its three-part series on AI which commenced earlier this year. Handouts will include information on and/or links to relevant legal developments.
