Tomorrow: The Refugee Advice and Casework Service's Judicial Review Project

26/11/2020

Webinar - Thursday 26 November

The Practice Development Committee, New Barristers' Committee and the Refugee Advice and Casework Service invites members to "The Refugee Advice and Casework Service's Judicial Review Project" webinar on Thursday 26 November at 5:15 pm.

A number of charitable organisations (as well as the Courts themselves) run programs to assist people in need to obtain legal services on a pro bono basis. The Refugee Advice and Casework Service's (RACS') is such an organisation. It assists people seeking asylum in Australia to obtain legal advice and, where appropriate, representation, including where an application for a protection visa has been refused. RACS and other similar organisations depend on assistance from barristers, in particular from the junior bar, to continue to assist such people.

This CPD will focus on RACS' Judicial Review Project and will deal primarily with the steps involved in bringing an application for judicial review of a decision of the Immigration Assessment Authority made under Pt 7AA of the Migration Act. In addition, the webinar will discuss the opportunities available to barristers to assist in advancing this worthy cause. Junior barristers involved in this project can expect to obtain valuable opportunities to appear (often unled) before judges of the Federal Circuit Court, instructed by a range of law firms.
