Archibald finalist: Portrait of Her Excellency the Hon Governor Margaret Beazley AC QC

27/05/2021

The Bar Association has commissioned a portrait of Her Excellency Governor Margaret Beazley AC QC to be donated to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Today, the portrait of Her Excellency has been listed as a finalist in the Archibald Prize.

Once the portrait has finished its Archibald finalist duties, it will be displayed in the President’s Court on Level 12 of the Law Courts Building.

Governor Beazley retired as President of the NSW Court of Appeal in 2019, having been the first woman appointed to that position (and, before that, having been the first woman to sit exclusively in the Federal Court).

The gift is a symbol of the great esteem and affection in which Her Excellency is held by the profession, especially in New South Wales. Currently, the President’s Court has portraits of the following former Presidents: Sugarman P, Jacobs P, Kirby P and Mason P.

A copy of the portrait can be viewed here.

The artist is Ms Tsering Hannaford, a rising Australian portrait artist who has been named an Archibald prize finalist in each of the last seven years (including receiving a Highly Commended in last year’s Archibald). She is also a regular finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award for portraiture. Tsering Hannaford’s artwork may be viewed on her website at: https://www.tseringhannaford.com.au/#/portraiture/
