Diwali or Deepavali, also known as the ‘festival of lights’, will be celebrated today amidst a series of festivities spanning multiple days.

Versions of this festival, including Tihar and Bandi Chhor Diwas, are celebrated by over one million Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs in Australia.

For many, the festival is a time to give thanks and celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Traditionally, fireworks and lamps known as ‘diyas’ are lit and families and friends come together to celebrate.
