Call for Expressions of Interest - NSWBA and AAI Train the Trainer Workshop

30/01/2025

The NSW Bar Association’s Professional Standards and Support Department is seeking Advocacy Coaches to assist twice yearly with the Bar Practice Course. Coaching sessions take place between 4.30 pm and 6 pm on selected weeknights over a two-week period during the course.

To encourage barristers to participate, we will be hosting a ‘Train the Trainer’ workshop in conjunction with the Australian Advocacy Institute in February 2025. This workshop aims to elevate advocacy standards across Australia and provides a platform to share and develop ideas and experiences in advocacy and advocacy training.

ADVOCACY COACHING

The NSW Bar Practice Course is a pivotal entry point to the profession, laying the foundation for Readers' first year of practice and influencing their entire career at the Bar. It offers Readers a unique opportunity to learn from senior members of the profession, who will dedicate time over a month to teach, share knowledge, and mentor, all while striving for professional excellence.

The role of the advocacy coach is crucial to the success of the Bar Practice Course. Coaches have a profound impact on new members of the Bar, motivating, inspiring, and providing constructive feedback in a respectful and professional manner. They model competence and actively assist Readers in refining their advocacy skills. This collaborative environment fosters a relationship of mutual professional growth and respect.

Becoming an Advocacy Coach offers an excellent opportunity to give back to the profession, improve one’s own advocacy skills, and reinforce best practices.

ELIGIBILITY

We encourage all barristers with relevant experience to apply. Ideal candidates will:

  • Have continuously held a New South Wales barrister’s practising certificate (or a practising certificate from another Australian jurisdiction) for at least seven years.

  • Be a full-time practising barrister in New South Wales.

  • Be able to commit to a minimum of two evening advocacy sessions (4.30 pm – 6 pm) per Bar Practice Course (held in May and September).
