Lunar New Year

29/01/2025

The Lunar New Year begins on 29 January 2025, heralding the start of the Spring Festival season that ends on the 15th day of the lunar calendar on the evening of the Lantern Festival. This year is the Year of the Snake. Each snake year features an element, with 2025 being the year of the Wood Snake.

Celebrated in China for thousands of years, the timing of the Lunar New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar. The date of the Lunar New Year thus varies from year to year.

Lunar New Year is also celebrated in many other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Koreas, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Whilst customs, rituals and the lengths of celebrations vary from culture to culture, honouring a fresh start remains at the core of the celebrations.
