The holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, begins at the first sighting of the crescent moon. This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Friday, 28 February and end at sundown on Sunday, 30 March, depending on the sighting of the moon.

The holy month of Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide. For many Muslims, Ramadan marks the month when the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, and it is a month of fasting from dawn until dusk, prayer, reflection and community.

On the final evening of Ramadan, the month long fast concludes with a feast as Muslims celebrate one of their major holidays, Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of the Breaking of the Fast”.

“Ramadan Mubarak” means “Have a blessed Ramadan”.
