10 March is proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as International Day of Women Judges. The General Assembly resolution reaffirms that the active participation of women, on equal terms with men, at all levels of decision-making is essential to the achievement of equality, sustainable development, peace and democracy. It invites Member States, as well as civil society, to observe the day including through education and public awareness-raising activities, in order to promote the full and equal participation of women at all levels of the judiciary.

The Australian Institute of Judicial Administration reported that, as at June 2024, women represented 43.3% of judges in NSW courts, representing increases of approximately 6 percentage points over a 5-year period and 10 percentage points over a 10-year period. It was also reported that women comprise 45.4% of judges in Commonwealth courts, representing increases of approximately 9 and 10 percentage points over 5-year and 10-year periods.
