Passover, one of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar which is celebrated for seven or eight days. This year it commences with a traditional dinner called the ‘Seder’ on the evening of 5 April 2023. The story of Passover commemorates the Jews’ exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt and G-d giving the Ten Commandments to Moses on top of Mount Sinai.
In Australia today, Passover is observed by Jewish families and communities gathering to participate in Seders, share meals and engage in traditional prayers and activities. It is not just a celebration of the past, but also a reminder of the ongoing struggles of Jewish people for freedom and justice in the world today. By remembering the story of Exodus, Jewish people around the world continue to affirm their commitment to the values of freedom, equality and justice that are at the heart of Jewish faith.
The greeting for Passover is “Chag Sameach!” (Happy Holidays) or “Chag Pesach Sameach!” (Happy Passover Holiday).
