Join Mary Walker OAM, Chair of the International Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, for the lecture on Outer Space, High-Altitude and International Law: What's in a Name, featuring Steven Freedland and Fred Chilton.
The delimitation between outer space and sovereign airspace remains an unresolved issue. While the lack of a clear delimitation has not given rise to significant legal problems in the past, ongoing technological advancements and the growing interest in space tourism, suborbital flights and various forms of High-Altitude Platforms (HAPS) are now posing new policy and legal challenges. These have been further highlighted by recent events involving balloons and a re-questioning as to the regulation of the area above commercial airspace. This talk will address the legal issues raised by increasingly more sophisticated high-altitude and space activities, and point to the relevant international and national law initiatives and regulatory frameworks that are being discussed and implemented.
