Effect of this morning’s flooding event on District Court matters in the Downing Centre and John Maddison Tower

17/06/2025

The Chief Judge of the District Court, Justice Huggett, has informed the Bar Association that the Downing Centre will NOT be open on Wednesday or Thursday this week due to the flooding event which occurred on Castlereagh Street this morning. What will occur thereafter will be the subject of further notice.

The matters that were listed in Court 3.1 today before Judge Hanley have been adjourned to 10am tomorrow at Central District Court.

All of Judge Hanley’s matters that are listed in Court 3.1 tomorrow and Thursday (and Friday if necessary) will now instead be before his Honour at Central District Court on those days at their ordinary allocated times.

The trials presently before Judge Culver and Judge Shead will be transferred to Darlinghurst. The parties in those cases should liaise directly with their Honours’ Associates.

Other parties with a part-heard matter listed tomorrow or Thursday can expect to be contacted by the judge’s associate to make arrangements for a new listing date.

Arrangements have been made to cancel all orders requiring in person or AVL appearances tomorrow and Thursday.

John Maddison Tower has also been affected and will not be able to operate at all tomorrow. All allocated civil matters will need to be adjourned in chambers by the allocated Judge. A Registrar of the court will contact parties in all unallocated matters and have them adjourned.

Any further information will be provided when it is to hand.
