Vale: Louise Margaret Byrne (1954–2025)

Louise Byrne passed away on Tuesday, 5 August 2025. Louise was called to the Bar in 1998 and was a member of Frederick Jordan Chambers for 27 years. Louise practised primarily in environmental planning and local government law and was appointed as an Acting Commissioner in the Land and Environment Court in February 2025. She commenced legal practice as a research and policy officer, working variously for the ALRC, the EPA, the Hon Mahla Pearlman AO of the Land and Environment Court, and the Hon Justices Mahoney AO QC and Mason AC KC, presidents of the NSW Court of Appeal. Louise was president of the NSW Women Lawyers Association in 2005–06, and was awarded a life membership in 2017. She was actively involved in a number of NSW Bar Association committees, and was a founding member of the Bar Knitting Group. A commemorative service celebrating Louise’s life and achievements will be held at the Mosman Uniting Church, 38a Belmont Road, Mosman at 2pm on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, followed by further reflections with family and friends at the Bathers Pavillion from 3.30pm.
