Rosh Hashanah, meaning ‘head of the year’, otherwise recognised as Jewish New Year, begins this evening. A common greeting for those celebrating is 'Shana Tova'.

It is one of the holiest days of the year for Jewish people around the world and marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, a period of reflection, repentance and spiritual renewal that culminates in Yom Kippur, ten days later.

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated with family and loved ones. People of the Jewish faith attend synagogue services and observe customs such as the sounding of the ‘shofar’ (a ram’s horn). Symbolic foods, encompassing the themes of sweetness, beginnings and roundness, are customary.
