The Safe Place meets tonight

08/10/2021

On Friday, 8 October 2021 the Safe Place will discuss catastrophising.

Legal education and practice are in many ways focussed on worst-case scenarios. As practitioners we are often asked to imagine how a matter could possibly go wrong – a style of thinking that can be professionally helpful, but personally problematic.

Examples of this kind of thinking include:

  • having a few matters settle at once and concluding that all your work has dried up;
  • having a number of large bills outstanding and worrying about financial ruin;
  • having a quiet patch and concluding that you will never be briefed again;
  • receiving critical comments from a judge and concluding that you are a hopeless advocate.

All members of the Bar are welcome to share about anything that has led to this sort of thinking – or, to listen anonymously as others share their experiences. Our hope is that Safe Place may assist barristers to feel supported and to know that others are facing similar struggles at the moment. Concerns about issues such as workflow, finances, and professional reputation are very common (if not ubiquitous) among your learned friends.

Safe Place is a confidential discussion group that takes place every two weeks. All participants are admitted to a Zoom webinar anonymously. You can:

  • choose to identify yourself and speak;
  • speak without providing your name; or
  • listen, with other participants not knowing you are there.

The next Safe Place will take place on Friday, 8 October 2021 at 5.00pm.
