15/11/2021

Tony McAvoy SC was the keynote speaker for the twenty first annual Dr Charles Perkins Memorial Oration which was pre-recorded and aired on the ABC on Saturday, 13 November. Amongst other things, Tony McAvoy SC spoke of the events leading up to and including the massacre of the Kalkatunga at Battle Mountain in the 1884. Mr McAvoy emphasised that stories of conflict between First Nations people and the British colonisers are stories ‘that deserve to hold a position in the national narrative alongside the Gallipoli and Kokoda Track.’ Mr McAvoy also spoke about the need for truth telling commissions as an essential part of treaty making with First Nations people.
