Spigelman Public Law Oration

The Public Law Section are proud to present the eighth Spigelman Public Law Oration which will be delivered by the Hon Justice James Edelman on the topic 'Implications'. The Oration will be held in the Banco Court, commencing at 5.00pm on Thursday, 21 April 2022.

Overview

Implications are prolific in language. We recognise implications by inference all the time. So too in law. But their operation in language as in law is little understood and tests for recognising implications are sometimes difficult to understand and apply. This speech explains what an implication is, how implications should be identified, and how the tests for recognising implications should be understood and applied. The focus is upon public and constitutional law but the speech will explain, including by reference to recent cases, that the lessons apply universally in law, including in private law.

RSVPs are not required and seating will be made available on a 'first come, first served' basis. Attendees are required to adhere to any Covid-19 protocols in place at the time of the event. The event will not be followed by the Public Law Section's annual dinner, which is likely to take place later in 2022.

Barristers who attend this event will be entitled to 1 CPD point in the substantive law strand. For those who wish to watch the Oration from home, use this link.
