President's message

21/10/2022

There was a delightful atmosphere on the steps of the Supreme Court at lunchtime on Wednesday, captured in the memories of those present, and in the image here. I would like to thank the hundreds of barristers able to attend the historic photograph of the NSW Bar in 2022, its 86th year, at a time when we again have KCs, we are emerging from the pandemic and the make-up of the bar is evolving. While not representative of the entire bar, it is a wonderful reflection and record of our dynamic members on a day in town in 2022. I believe it also sends a message that, if you have the intellect and mettle to pass the bar exam and the bar practice course, no matter your background or gender, you are welcome at the NSW Bar. It makes visible the changing face of the Bar.

For those wondering why a further photograph was taken of female barristers, the Women Barristers Forum had a photograph taken for its website. It is also an uplifting image showing the progress our profession has made. I hope that it will help to encourage participation by future generations. You can see it here.
