IBA: Honorary Life Membership

The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG was recently elected an honorary life member (HLM) of the International Bar Association.

Since 2015, his Honour served as Member of the IBA Human Rights Institute Council; as vice-chairman of the HRI; and between 2018-21 as co-chair of the HRI successively with Adv Hans Corell (former General Counsel to the SG of the United Nations) and Adv Anne Ramberg (former long-time director of the Swedish Bar Association).

His Honour is the second Australian to receive this honour, after Nicholas Cowdery AO KC, long-time participant in IBA activities, former DPP of New South Wales and advocate of global human rights.

The IBA comprises more than 80,000 individual lawyers worldwide and 190 Bar Associations. The Council of the IBA Human Rights Institute is based in the IBA headquarters which are in London, UK.
