Today: Remembrance Day
11/11/2022

11 November 2022 marks Remembrance Day, the national day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts.
Remembrance Day started as Armistice Day in 1918, acknowledging the Armistice which ended the fight with Germany. This name remained until after World War II, in which it was then subsequently called Remembrance Day. The occasion was marked by school, church and fire station bells ringing, declaring that the war was over.
A moment of silence is always held at 11.00am on 11 November, to remember those who have served in defence forces in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since World War 1. Sir William Deane, former Governor-General formalised the minute of silence around Australia in 1997. It has been observed ever since.
Services were held around Australia today.
