The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival and by different names in different countries, is celebrated by many Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Japan and Korea, as well as their cultural diasporas around the world.

For many, the festival is held in celebration of the end of the harvest and at the time of the full moon. Accordingly, the date of the festival changes each year in accordance with the lunar calendar. This year, the festival begins on 17 September.

Celebrations vary across countries, regions and cultures but commonly include worship (including moon appreciation), gatherings and food – especially mooncakes filled with various seed pastes. To learn more about the Mid-Autumn Festival and how it is celebrated in Australia, click here.
