International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: 9 August 2023

07/08/2023

First Nations

Each year, 9 August is observed as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The day presents an opportunity to reflect on the challenges Indigenous Peoples face across the world and to walk alongside them in taking proactive steps towards promoting and protecting their rights. The day recognises and honours the achievements of Indigenous Peoples across the globe and celebrates the richness of Indigenous cultures, traditions and heritage. This year’s theme is Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination, which reminds the international community of the role of Indigenous youth in exercising self-determination, with a particular focus on climate action and the green transition, mobilising for justice, and intergenerational connections.
