Volunteers sought for Legal Assistance Referral Scheme

23/09/2025

The NSW Bar Association Legal Assistance Referral Scheme, which has formally existed since 1996, reflects the strongly held view of the Bar that a person’s rights and access to justice should not be diminished because they have little or no money. If you are willing to offer your services to assist, please complete this online form to register your interest in any/all of the following: the Duty Barrister Scheme, the Legal Assistance Referral Scheme and the Coronial Inquests Pilot Program (CIPP).

The CIPP involves a new referral process to facilitate requests for advice by unrepresented witnesses called to give evidence in coronial proceedings. Referrals are limited to witnesses seeking advice about the operation of s 61 of the Coroners Act 2009 (NSW) and the privilege against self-incrimination in coronial proceedings. Guidelines for all the schemes are available from the Bar Association's website under About Legal Assistance.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Legal Assistance team at the Bar Association.

If you no longer wish to receive InBrief, please notify the Bar Association via email at certification@nswbar.asn.au
