John O’Meally AM RFD, the first President of the Dust Diseases Tribunal of New South Wales, died on Friday 4 October. Judge O'Meally was instrumental in the establishment of the Tribunal in 1989.
His Honour was called to the Bar in 1964. In 1979, at the age of 39, he was appointed as a judge of what was then the Workers Compensation Commission, later the Compensation Court, of New South Wales.
Judge O’Meally retired in November of 2011, after what then Attorney-General Smith described as 32 years of 'exceptional service to victims of asbestos related disease'. Upon his retirement, he was the longest serving judge in New South Wales.
A funeral will be held at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Randwick on Friday 18 October at 1:30pm.
