Today: Part 1 - Appearing on behalf of an Independent Children’s Lawyer: the role of the Independent Children’s Lawyer

03/12/2024

In person - Tuesday, 03 December 2024

This is the first of a 2-part presentation in an attempt to ‘bridge a gap’ and assist junior counsel to understand the important role of the ICL, and gain valuable insights on how to be an effective advocate when appearing for the ICL, by focusing on the role of ICL.

Various systemic factors mean briefs to appear on behalf of an Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL) are being offered to junior counsel and readers, notwithstanding the increasing complexity of such matters. Briefs to appear for the ICL can be challenging to seasoned counsel, let alone to a new advocate who may not have exposure to the work of an ICL.

Please join Katie Kelso, Acting Executive Director of Family Law at Legal Aid, Leah Reid of Greenway Chambers, and Judge Beckhouse of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2). The event will be moderated by John Longworth of Frederick Jordan Chambers.
