Kokoda Walk to Hell and Back for depression

14/04/2009

Members of the Institute of Strata Titles Management (ITSM) will walk the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea for the Black Dog Institute to increase awareness of depression and to raise money to support the institute. They are looking for members of the Bar Association to be a part of it.

Why Kokoda?

Kokoda is one of many places where the "Aussie" spirit is entrenched in our hearts and souls. The Kokoda Trail and the sacrifices made are part of our national pride and makeup. So in some respects the answer is why not. Some do the walk for support, some for remembrance, others for family and memories. The aim of this trek is to give to others and help those in need in our communities and continue the spirit that is Kokoda.

It can be best summed by the four words synonymous with Kokoda: Mateship, Courage, Sacrifice, Endurance

Why Black Dog?

Ever thought about sitting in the jungle in the pouring rain, covered in mud day after day, with an opposition trying to end your life and you end theirs. Do you think that would be a little depressing?

Many a returned servicemen has talked about pressure, depression and fear in times of war. The sad thing is that depression and other illnesses are not confined to war time, they are with us constantly affecting family and friends and in some cases ourselves.

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and Bipolar Disorder. What better way to help others than to do something for a worthy charity, have a life changing experience and challenge yourself?

ITSM need your help. Their goal is $100k
