New Commonwealth Bill to "comprehensively criminalise" people smuggling

24/02/2010

Attorney General Robert McClelland has introduced the Anti-People Smuggling and Other Measures Bill 2010 into the Australian Parliament. The Bill amends a number of Acts, such as the Criminal Code Act 1995, the Migration Act 1958 and, more significantly, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979, together with legislation governing telecommunications interception and surveillance devices. In his second reading speech, the attorney general said that the bill "will ensure that people smuggling is comprehensively criminalised in Australian law with tough penalties for the most serious forms of this crime".
