The Bar Council has approved the release of the Association's Criminal Justice Reform Submission which contains a number of suggestions for the reform of the criminal law in advance of the March 2011 State election. The Submission was prepared by the Association's Criminal Law Committee following the Criminal Justice Reform Conference held in September 2010. The Policy proposes a new scheme for fitness to be tried in summary matters for mentally ill persons and endorses Sentence Indication Hearings. A substantial portion of the Policy addresses critical issues in relation to the sentencing of Aboriginal offenders and proposes the reform of various elements of the criminal law to ensure that Aboriginal offenders are dealt with in a fair and equitable manner. The President has written to the Attorney General and Shadow Attorney General enclosing a copy of the Submission for their consideration. 13 December 2010
