New South Wales: the State of Imprisonment

The NSW imprisonment rate is virtually double than of Victoria (204/100,000 of population, compared with 104/100,000 of population). Why is this so? The New South Wales Burueau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) sought answers by comparing�crime, court and prison data from both states.�It concluded that the different imprisonment rates can be�attributed�to four key factors in NSW:�a higher rate of court appearance, a slightly higher conviction rate, a higher likelihood of imprisonment and a higher likelihood of remand in custody.
