More news on Crown rates for junior and senior counsel

10/03/2011

Last year, In Brief reported that Attorney General Hatzistergos had approved increases in Crown rates for junior and senior counsel, effective 18 October 2010. In a letter to President Tom Bathurst QC, the attorney has confirmed that the maximum daily rate for juniors in all Crown Solicitors matters is the same as that announced last year for the attorney's matters, that is, up to $1800.

The attorney general has also advised that there is no automatic entitlement to the maximum rate for juniors, and that the Crown Solicitors Office is expected to negotiate an appropriate fee having regard to the matter, the experience of counsel and the government's need to keep legal costs reasonable.
