Volunteers needed for 2011 Barristers in Schools program

24/03/2011

Want to give primary school students a better idea of the law and how it works? The Bar Association is seeking volunteers for its ‘Barristers in Schools’ program. The program was developed in 2008 by Margaret Cunneen SC and Karen Conte-Mills in consultation with the attorney general, the Department of Education and Training and the Bar Association. Participants in the program will give a two hour presentation to Year 5/6 students from schools across Sydney. The presentation will include:

 • An interactive session on the justice system and general legal principles; and • A mock criminal trial in which the students assume the roles of prosecutors, defence counsel, police, the accused and jurors. Participation in the program requires: • Attendance at a training session held at the Bar Association on 12 April 2011, from 5-6 pm. • Commitment to a date, between the hours of approximately 9 and 2. • Some paperwork (ie: a ‘Working with children’ check, approximately 2 pages). The program will be held in venues around Sydney, most within the Sydney CBD. Any travel-related expenditure incurred while participating in the program will be reimbursed by the association. If you are interested in participating in this year’s program please contact Megan Black, Senior Policy Lawyer, at mblack@nswbar.asn.au or on 9229 1739 by close of business on Monday, 4 April 2011.
