Victorian Bar calls for fair go for legal aid in federal budget

The Victorian Bar and the Law Institute of Victoria say Australia’s most disadvantaged are missing out on fair access to justice and have called on the Australian Government to address the legal aid black hole in the 2011 Federal Budget next week. The Law Council of Australia's Budget Submission estimates that nearly $312M is required over four years to return Commonwealth funding to 50 per cent of legal aid nationally, up from 33 per cent currently.
