DSL Match Report - Bar FC vs Corrs

Yesterday, NSW Bar FC faced off against a much younger and desperate Corrs, currently placed fourth on the leader-board and anxious to maintain that position in the run-up to the finals.

This week�Bar FC�welcomed back to the fold Callan (having not played since�she debuted for NSW Bar FC in the inaugural State of Origin against Victoria in 2008) and Turnbull SC (after a long work induced absence). Callan had big boots to fill as Mahony was sidelined with injury. Out also with injury was Captain Harris (with a niggling groin). Patch was back for his second successive week and chasing the elusive Golden Boot gong. � The first scoring opportunity from a brilliant throw by Afshar on the downhill slope went begging as Patch narrowly missed putting boot to ball about 6 minutes into the first term. It was an even contest as our defenders (led by de Meyrick, Callan and Free playing uncharacteristically in the backline) expertly repelled the occasional forays into NSW Bar’s half enabling our mid-section (Smith, Stanton, Graham and Fordham) to feed the ball up to our attacking mid-field and strikers (Patch, Afshar, Maghami and Bolger).

A nice pass a few minutes before half-time enticed Turnbull (in goals) from his line and was snuck in for the first point of the match.

Harris was heard at half-time reminding Patchy that he could only pose a threat to the Golden Boot if he actually scored. Fired up by these obvious words of encouragement, Patch was instrumental in NSW Bar FC’s first goal a few minutes into the second term when a passing header in the penalty box failed to connect with Stanton.� A defender sensing Stanton’s menacing presence brought him down with what appeared theatric poise reminiscent of the Azzuris last World Cup campaign (except in Stanton's case there was unlawful contact). The subsequent penalty was sensationally converted by Free to even up the score at 1 apiece.

With about 5 minutes left in the game, Fordham lurking in the midsection cleared a beautiful kick to a rampaging Afshar who slammed the ball into the back of the net from about 20 metres out for what must be the goal of the season. � NSW Bar FC held out to record a 2-1 win. � Next Game v Middletons � Bar FC's next game is against third-placed Middletons on Wednesday, 8 August 2012 at 1.15 pm. � With only 3 games left in the season and NSW Bar FC seemingly peaking,�they need every win if they are to retain any prospect of a semi-finals berth.
