In the Club: A WLA networking cocktail event

15/02/2013

The Women Lawyers Association (NSW) invites members to attend "In the Club": a networking cocktail event, with guest speaker Marion Pascoe. It will take place between 6-8pm on Thursday, 21 February 2013 at the Union, University & Schools Club of Sydney, 25 Bent Street.

Many of Australia's oldest and finest clubs are private gentlemen's and ladies clubs that provide social and professional support networks for their members. The Union, University & Schools Club (the “UUSC”) is the result of the merger of the Union Club and the University & Schools Club. For well over a 100 years it only admitted gentlemen as full members. Today, women constitute 19 per cent of its membership.

Marion Pascoe is a barrister and a deputy parliamentary counsel for NSW. She was elected as the first female president of both the University & Schools Club in 2004 and of the UUSC in 2010. She was recently elected for her third term of office as president the UUSC.

She will share some of her experiences as president of a predominantly male club and as a parliamentary drafter. She will discuss some of the reasons women join private clubs, and describe some of the factors that have led to the evolution of all-male clubs into mixed gender clubs, both in Australia and overseas. Please download a flyer for details and registration.
