Shoot for the Bar photography competition - entries due on Friday, 10 May

13/03/2013

All members of the New South Wales Bar Association and Ngalaya are invited to participate in the ‘Shoot for the Bar’ competition as the photographer or as the subject of the photo to represent creative ways of increasing the number of Aboriginal barristers in NSW, through original photographic representations. Photos can be serious, whimsical, comical or any other form. This is an exciting initiative of the Indigenous Barristers Trust The Mum Shirl Fund and we look forward to your involvement. Enter here.

There will be two awards in the competition: the Judges’ Award and the Peoples’ Choice Award, which will be voted for online and at the Awards Party on 31 May. Judges’ Award entries will be judged by Tamara Dean, multi award winning photographic artist represented by Olsen Irwin Gallery and The Hon Justice Michael Slattery, a Trustee of the Indigenous Barristers Trust The Mum Shirl Fund. Prizes for the competition will include tickets to the Bangarra’s new production at the Opera House, Blak, a dining voucher to Billy Kwong and vouchers for high tea at the Westin.

The competition is now open and all photographs must be submitted by 10 May 2013. An Awards Party to announce the winners will take place on 31 May 2013 from 5.30-7.30pm in the Bar Association Common Room. The full Terms & Conditions of the competition are available here.

To enter the competition or buy tickets for the Awards Night, please download the Entry and RSVP Form.

Objective of the competition

The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for the NSW Bar Association commenced on 1 January 2013 and continues the Association’s previous efforts and provides a structure for the objectives with the overall aim of contributing to reconciliation through three key areas of relationships, respect and opportunities. The primary goal of the RAP is to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander barristers practising at the NSW Bar. The objective of the photography competition is to inject some creativity and some fun into depictions of ways that could increase Indigenous representation.

About Tamara Dean

'Tamara's work obviously displays a tremendour grasp of colour, tone and light. Along with this she achieves the magic of marrying the deliberate cinematic setting, with the seemingly spontaneous act. Although the images are well composed, there is the sense that everything just fell into place or just happened. Ironically within her considered approach there is also a free spirit, all of which seems to exist simultaneously. Her unassuming and understated demeanour obviously puts her subjects at ease, so everything and everyone seems sincere and natural'.
