Bar Association mandatory sentencing briefing papers for MPs and media

Following the NSW Government’s recent announcement of mandatory minimum sentences for “one punch” assaults, President Phil Boulten SC has prepared a background note for the media outlining the ineffectiveness of mandatory sentencing laws as a deterrent, and the disproportionate effect of such laws on the disadvantaged. The Bar Association has also distributed a comprehensive briefing note for members of parliament concerning the government’s proposals, in advance of their consideration by State Parliament next week.
