Wanted: judges for UTS witness examination competition

The UTS Law Students' Society is seeking lawyers to adjudicate its Witness Examination competition this year. This in an advocacy focussed competition that mimics examinations of witnesses in a criminal trial, with emphasis on the ability of competitors to ask questions of a witness in accordance with their case theory. It requires each competitor (acting as either the prosecution or the defence) to conduct an examination-in-chief, cross-examination and opening and closing statement on a certain criminal charge and mock factual scenario.

Judging

Judging comprises of adjudicating the examinations-in-chief, cross-examinations and opening and closing remarks of each of the two competitors. Each round runs for approximately 1 hour, with an additional 5-10 minutes required to give feedback to the competitors at the end.

Competition dates

This upcoming semester’s senior witness examination competition will run on Tuesdays on the dates listed below, with the rounds commencing from approximately 2pm to 7.30pm: - Prelim round – Tuesday 18 March - Round 1 – Tuesday 25 March - Round 2 – Tuesday 1 April - Round 3 – Tuesday 8 April - Round 4 – Tuesday 29 April - Quarter finals – Tuesday 6 May - Semi-finals – Tuesday 13 May - Grand final – TBA
