SMH opinion piece on mandatory sentencing

The chair of the Bar Association's Criminal Law Committee, Stephen Odgers SC, wrote an op-ed article for today's Sydney Morning Herald, entitled "Mandatory sentencing creates a risk of excessive punishments". Mr Odgers warns that the government's legislation will not reduce violent crime and could only result in a significant increase in the number of contested trials, enormous cost to the community, delays for other cases, and more stress for victims.
