It was Equal Pay Day in Australia last week, which seeks to raise awareness of why women do not get equal pay for work of equal value. A gender pay gap exists as soon as women enter the workforce (before they have children) and in 2016, ANU’s Centre for Social Research and Methods analysed the ATO’s 2013-14 data on what men and women earn by occupation and found barristers in Australia to be among those occupations with a large gender pay gap. This year marks the 50th year since the signing of the Equal Pay Act in Australia, which seeks to achieve equality, where everyone gets paid fairly regardless of their gender.
