Speaking on Saturday, at the UK Bar Council’s annual conference in London, President Hale stated that the number of female judges in the UK is growing faster than previously expected and that gender parity on the bench should be achieved within 14 years, by 2033. President Hale referred to gender equality as the first step in equality before the law for “men and women, black and white, gay and straight, the poor and rich”, so that everyone “should feel confident that the law is there for them if they need it”. President Hale is one of the last Law Lords and after turning 75 in January 2020, and standing down from the UK Supreme Court, will take a seat on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal.
