Expressions of interest: NSWBA exam markers

13/01/2026

The NSW Bar Association’s Professional Development Department is seeking exam markers to assist with the bi-annual Bar Exams (held in February and June). The Bar Exam is the entry point to the profession, and this role is critical to setting and marking the exams at the appropriate level. As the number of candidates taking the Bar Exam is increasing, we are seeking expressions of interest from suitable barristers to take on the role of exam markers.

Exam markers – role

A separate pool of markers is maintained in relation to the criminal paper and the civil paper respectively. As a marker appointed to either panel you would be required to:

  • Collaborate with the exam writer and other markers to prepare and review the exam and marking guide for either the criminal or civil paper (prior to the exam)
  • Complete the allocated marking and review marking. Marking is completed during the three working days immediately after the exam, and review marking over two days the week after the exam.
  • Assist with the development of a Markers Report

Eligibility

We encourage all barristers with relevant experience to apply. Ideal candidates will:

  • Be a practising barrister in New South Wales with at least three years’ experience
  • Be able to commit the time as per the dates listed below

Important Dates

In addition to assisting with the draft of the exam, markers should be able to complete marking over the following dates for 2026.

February 2026

  • Marking: 13, 16, 17 February 2026
  • Review marking: 20, 23 February 2026

June 2026

  • Marking: 12, 15, 16 June 2026
  • Review marking : 19, 22 June 2026

Successful applicants will be notified by early February 2026.

How to apply

Please complete the expression of interest form here.

Note: Completion of the form does not guarantee a place. Places are limited, and priority will be given to barristers with a demonstrated interest in the education programs of the NSW Bar Association.

We look forward to your participation!
