Towards an Australian Declaration of Recognition

Noel Pearson has launched a new approach in the quest for Constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. Speaking at the launch of an organisation called Uphold & Recognise, Mr Pearson lent support to first settling an Australian Declaration of Recognition: a short eloquent, statement of principles that would be in lieu of a new Preamble and would "sit beside" an amended Constitution in much the same way as the American Declaration of Independence. The purpose would be to inform political and cultural debate and he cited the example of the Treaty of Waitangi. It would be drafted by Australians through a public competition. Learn more here.
