The new Billing Checklist for Barristers and other guidance regarding the new Legal Profession Uniform Law

07/07/2015

The Legal Profession Uniform Law commenced on Wednesday 1 July. The Billing Checklist for Barristers sets out some commonly encountered requirements relating to barristers’ billing practices under Part 4.3 of the new Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW), the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 (UGR), the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014 (NSW) and the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Regulation 2015 (NSW), which take effect from 1 July 2015. The Billing Checklist, together with suggested precedents, can be obtained from the Costs and Billing page of the Bar Association website.

The Costs and Fees Committee has also produced a guide to Legal Costs Under the Uniform Law for members. As that guide makes clear, Clause 15 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Regulation 2015requires barristers holding money in advance in direct access matters to notify the Bar Association from 1 July. Members who wish to notify the Association under clause 15 should provide relevant details to the Association's Certification Officer, Barrie Anthony
