John Bede Dalley was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1902. When the First World War broke out Dalley was several times rejected for service with the Australian Imperial Force because of his deafness, but was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Australian Field Artillery. Joseph Lamaro was initially rejected for service in the AIF because of poor eyesight. He eventually enlisted in January 1916 and served as a signaller in the Battle of the Somme. Lamaro returned to Australia and was admitted to the bar in 1922. These are just some of men who served in the First World War, either before or after practising at the bar. A list of those who served is being compiled by Tony Cunneen and is available on the Bar Association website for viewing.
