Vesak, the day of the full moon in the month of May (lunar month of Vesakha), is the most sacred day of the year for many Buddhists around the world. The day commemorates the birth of Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his passing away. The dates of the celebration vary among Buddhist cultures and communities.

The United Nations General Assembly, by its resolution 54/115 of 1999, recognised the Day of Vesak to acknowledge the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity.

Vesak is celebrated differently according to local customs. Many Buddhists spend the day at their local temple, practicing good deeds, reflecting on Buddhist teachings and sharing food with others. Traditions on this day also include cultural song and dance performances, public messages delivered by community leaders, and the decoration of temples.
