International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples - 9 August 2024

09/08/2024

Diversity

Each year, 9 August is observed as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The day presents an opportunity to reflect on the challenges Indigenous Peoples face across the world and to walk alongside them in taking proactive steps towards promoting and protecting their rights. The day recognises and honours the achievements of Indigenous Peoples across the globe and celebrates the richness of Indigenous cultures, traditions and heritage.

This year’s theme is ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’. Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact are protectors of wilderness and custodians of rich cultural and linguistic traditions. Where their collective rights to lands and territories are protected, the environment thrives, along with their societies.
